Tiffany Stone, aka Bertrandite, Opal Fluorite rough slab

Origin: Utah

Characteristics: Red, black, white, yellow. preformed to make it easier for you to finish. Unique and rare pattern. Unfinished natural slab, no pits or open fractures only a few rough areas along the edge. Several naturally sealed fracture lines that fit right in with the beauty of the slabs colors. Hardness 6.5 - 7.

The major ore of Bertrandite is beryllium, and the major deposits of beryllium in the United States were in the Spor Mountains of Utah. Brush Wellman, Inc. bought the mineral rights to these deposits and began mining in the 1960's. As of today I don't know if these mines are still open or covered over by the Government because they are considered dangerous. This material was not available to the general public when I was collecting more the 15 years ago, mainly because the value of beryllium was high. Two types of this material I know exist are opalized fluorite and agatized fluorite (like this rough slab).

The colors in this slab are really unique and very rare. I purchased my rough 15 years ago from a person that had a whole table full of rough. A little bit of it was colorful which he said was agatized. He told me he was authorized to take it from the mine and sell what he had. Most of the material I've seen for sale is a purple color, similar to another one I'm selling in my shop, it is the opalized type with a hardness of 5 - 6. It is also prone to fade if left in the hot sun (the surface on my 8 lb boulder did).

Tiffany stone is a rock composed primarily of fluorite with smaller amounts of opal, calcite, dolomite, quartz, chalcedony, Bertrandite and other materials. Other names used for Tiffany stone are "opalized fluorite," "ice cream stone," and "Bertrandite."

Approx size: 14 x 48 x 5.5 mm, Weight: 39.3 ct

An 18 mm dime and 10 mm background squares in some pictures should help you with image sizing.

Combining items with 2 or more listings. If they will fit in a standard bubble package and the weight is less than 4 ounces I will ship them with no extra charges.

Preformed slabs: My slabs have all or most of the pits and open fractures removed and the front and back smoothed to produce a more acceptable slab for you to finish.

Finishing purchased slabs, I have created several posts that show how I create cabs, see my website blog on Designsbyshirl.com.

I use a full spectrum 45 w light bulb - photography photo CFL 5500K. It's a daylight balanced pure white light.

My first 2 pictures show the slabs wet. Other pictures show items dry, this should show imperfections (small cracks or pits) if there are any.
