I prefinished this slab by removing ugly pits and fractures and trimmed away anything that didn't look good. I shaped it and gave it a final 1200 diamond grit sanded smooth finish. Based on their physical makeup some end up with a really nice shine, sometimes like a mirror. If I have to leave anything in, like pits or fractures, I will mention them in the below description. This slab is nice enough to use in your designer jewelry or in your collection.

SLAB DISCRIPTION:

TIFFANY STONE (also called Bertrandite, Opalized Fluorite, and a few other names), shaped & prefinished, 1 tiny pit, no open fractures, all sides flat and smooth, ready to use asis, all natural., mirror polished with 1200 diamond grit. Colors: purple fluorite, white Opal.

Approx size: 37 x 25 x 8 mm, 54.5 ct

This type of rock is composed primarily of fluorite with smaller amounts of opal, calcite, dolomite, quartz, chalcedony, Bertrandite and other materials. The major find in this long list is "Bertrandite" which contains Beryllium a chemical element with the symbol Be and atomic number 4, it is sold to the areospace, defense, and high-tech industries. Reports show that this business is going strong and will probably last another 75 or more years (date unknown).

The major ore of Bertrandite is beryllium, and the major deposits of beryllium in the United States were in the Spor Mountains of Utah. Brush Wellman, Inc. bought the mineral rights to these deposits and began mining in the 1960's, it is now Materion Corp. The mine is not open for specimens but they are doing business selling the Beryllium, I guess you can stand in line if you want some of this. I purchased my rough 20 years ago from a dealer that had a whole table full of rough at Quartzsite, Az. The plastic stand is included in this sale. Be careful with this type of rock, it will fade in the hot sun, don't leave it in the yard. I had to cut away the faded portion of my 16 lb rough rock to get back the purple colors.
