My preformed rough slabs have all or most of the pits and open fractures removed and the front and back smoothed to produce a more acceptable slab for you to finish as a cab or specimen.

PEANUT WOOD, 20 x 46 x 5 mm, weight: 42 ct. Origin: Australia, becoming rare.

Characteristics: Characteristics: Brown and creme colored. Teredo castings. Unfinished, rare petrified wood material.

Peanut Wood is a rare and beautiful petrified wood from Australia. Rare because it is rarely mined, mainly because it required heavy equipment and the lack of water at the location. The lighter areas of the stone are made by a marine wood-boring bivalve, Teredo.

This is an ancient drift wood that sank to the mud at the bottom of the ocean and remained for millions of years. The wood is of several varieties, the main ones being "Araucaria"...a conifer & podocarp.

Found along the edges of the Kennedy Ranges about 100 miles inland from the coastal town of Carnarvon, Western Australia. The geological formation found in makes it around 120 million years old.

AZURITE and SHATTUCKITE, 20 X 39 X 7 mm, weight: 68.5 ct., Origin: Arizona, rare.

Characteristics: Rough preformed unpolished slab, Azurite, Shattuckite and secondary minerals found in the Ajo copper mines of Arizona. Spider web appearance. This slab will produce a beautiful cabochon or finish and keep as a specimen. Its smooth preformed finish will make it easier for you to cab. No pits or open fractures.

A very unique and rare type of Shattuckite from Arizona. Shattuckite is a relatively rare copper silicate mineral. It was first discovered in 1915 in the copper mines of Bisbee, Arizona, specifically the Shattuck Mine (hence the name). The Ajo mine is probably where my rough came from. I have seen similar for sale on the internet. This material has a spider web appearance.

Azurite, a very popular gemstone used for cabochons because of its unparalleled color, a deep royal blue called "azure". It is normally found with Malachite, but can also be found with other copper ores, such as sky blue Shattuckite or red Cuprite.

CHINESE WRITING STONE, 35 x 25 x 7 mm, weight: 66 ct., Origin: Calif.

Chinese Writing Stone is the name given to a dark grey-green/black form of Basalt Porphyry/Porphyrite (an igneous rock) which has small strips of off white/white inclusions, often plagioclase feldspar, which when grouped together are reminiscent of a type of Chinese script.

Found in the Sierra Nevada foothills near Auburn, California.

Finishing your slabs: My recommendation, start with 325 diamond grit and finish with 600 grit before polishing. I have created several posts that show how I create cabs, see my website blog on Designsbyshirl.com.

I use a full spectrum 45 w light bulb - photography photo CFL 5500K. It's a daylight balanced pure white light.

My first 2 pictures show the slabs wet, this brings out the colors you should see in a finished product. Other pictures show items dry, this should show imperfections (small cracks or pits) if there are any. Translucent items will have at least one picture taken with a backlight.

An 18 mm dime and 10 mm background squares in some pictures should help you with image sizing.
