Liddicoatite Tourmaline

This material is quite rare, it's translucent with colors of pink, blue/gray and black. The origin is not exact, but the area near Anjanabonoina, Madagascar is a place that is well known for it occurrence. Its now difficult to access the area and the mining sites. With its security problems it continues to limit further production at Anjanabonoina. Previously mined material does enter the market occasionally. I purchased this example around 20 years ago at the Tucson gem show. I haven't come across it since, you can find other examples on the internet, most are in collections, and I've read that 4 or 5 other countries has brought this material to the marketplace, I can't find any examples that compares to this one.

First recognized as a variety of tourmaline in 1971, Liddicoatite is the rare, calcium-rich variety of tourmaline that was named in honor of Richard Liddicoat, the GIA gemologist who invented the diamond grading system.

Approx size, irregular shape: 23 x 30 x 2 mm, 15 ct, Polished both front and back. Some naturally sealed fracture lines are visible but very hard to make out, from what I've read this is quite normal. If you think my price is to much for this rare piece, you can make me an offer.

An 18 mm dime and 10 mm background squares in some pictures should help you with image sizing.
